Vote NO on the California Train
on the November 2008 Ballot
We must have a train, but we must get the most for our money and expand the
systems that gives us the best possible outcomes.
Expanding San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) service to San Jose, Sacramento, and Stockton must be the first priority
while planning a later expansion from Sacramento to San Jose.
Then, build a high-speed route from Mexico City to Anchorage, Alaska,
starting with Los Angles to Stockton. Phase two will expand the route to
Sacramento in the North and San Diego to the South. The train must be
electric and capable of 150 MPH speeds. The price must be set to
encourage ridership and fund additional infrastructure while adding a small
amount for future expansion yet compete with fuel prices.
But before considering a California Train, we must get our energy usage
right. We can not redo this one; we must get energy right the first time.
The right train, the right route, the right pieces are all important, but
building out the renewable energy must come first.
We can solve the climate crisis, and the train is one extraordinary solution.
To give renewable energy a competitive advantage and later the train, we must first have a pollution surcharge, where we pay the real price for oil,
coal, natural gas, cooling towers, bio-diesel and ethanol. But part of the
pollution surcharge must go toward cleaning up the old stuff we have put
into the atmosphere.
